seen a lot of the world since it last saw its birthplace, and the next stop would be the
National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. Cathy Hansen collection. |

On take-off for its around-the-world flight,
voyagers wings were so heavy with fuel that they scraped along the runway at Edwards.
Constructed of a foam core covered with composite material, the scraping severed the
vertical winglets which were supposed to enhance the efficiency of the wing. NASM folks
left the wing tips in the as-scraped condition when they put the Voyager on display. |
